In reading this story about the Indian broadband situation I can’t help but think that a war for customers in one of the most populated countries, India, is about to erupt. As more and more devices –- phones, netbooks and tablets –- come to the market, the demand for Wi-Fi-based connectivity is only going to rise. The question is, how much are you willing to pay for it? For despite its ubiquity, Wi-Fi is still an expensive proposition — especially while on the go. The other option, of course, is to get...

Generation Internet: That’s Anyone Under 30, Not Just Teens
Generation Internet: That’s Anyone Under 30, Not Just Teens
Though it’s fun to talk about the digital habits of kids as if they were a separate, SMS-crazed species, what happens when teens hit 20? Do they turn the page on their youth and assimilate into adult Internet use? Maybe not. It’s starting to look like online teens may actually have a lot in common with young adults. In two recent surveys...

Stand up for freedom on the web (Round 2: the UK and EU)
Back in April, I encouraged everyone to respond to the French authorities’ consultations on net neutrality. Thank you very, very much to all of you Internet users, software developers, and other good people who spoke out in favour of the open Internet. Late July, French Minister Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet sent her report to the French Parliament...

It’s Official: News Media Are Missing The Twitter Boat
Less than 0.2 percent of people who use Twitter wind up going to news and media sites from the social-networking site, according to a recent analysis by traffic-measurement firm Hitwise (although Hitwise just looked at traffic coming from the web site, not any third-party apps or services). So what are the top places that users go from Twitter?...

Hate ChatRoulette? Then You Hate The Internet
Every once in a while, a service or feature comes along that crystallizes everything people love and hate about the Internet. ChatRoulette is definitely one of those services. Plenty has been written already about the new social tool, which is a little like the Internet video version of speed dating. It was created by a 17-year-old Russian student...

The Facebook Mobile Agenda Starts to Become Clearer
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg didn’t stand up well against the beaming lights and the piercing questions at the D Conference last night. Zuckerberg was noticeably sweaty and overheated, and his run-on sentences came off poorly in comparison to quips from practiced CEOs like Steve Jobs and Steve Ballmer (see video here ). We’re not going...
