Brightkite’s GroupText Is a Text Messaging Party Line
When I think about the lowest common denominator of mobile communications, text messaging follows close behind voice. Obviously, every phone offers voice capability by definition, but texts are nearly as ubiquitous. Email is catching up as consumers leave basic feature phones for smartphones — and many feature phones offer either a native...

What Rupert Murdoch Still Doesn’t Get About the Internet
Rupert Murdoch knows who’s winning the war between big media and the Internet. Unsurprisingly, it’s Rupert Murdoch. “Without content, the ever-larger and flatter screens, the tablets, the e-readers and the increasingly sophisticated mobile phones would be lifeless,” he proclaimed when News Corp. posted unexpectedly strong fiscal...
Skype and the Apple iPad
As you may have noticed, the Apple iPad has been released in the US today. We don’t yet know how our app will behave on the iPad. Some journalists who had early access have reported that the existing Skype for iPhone app works just fine on the iPad hardware. This is great news, but certainly doesn’t give us enough confidence to be able...
Skype vs. Fring: Is Fring not telling the whole truth?
Today mobile startup Fring is in the news for their claim that Skype is blocking access for video calls to and from Skype users. Fring issued a news release and wrote a rather inflammatory blog post which has garnered them coverage on TechCrunch and many other sites . With typical David vs. Goliath fervor, much of the reporting so far seems to have...
AT&T Voicemail to Text or GoogleVoice
AT&T is touting a new voicemail to text service very similar to what the previously ill fated SpinVox was offering or what you can buy now from PhoneTag . The $9.99 price tage immediately draws the comparison to GoogleVoice which now offers a similar speech to text translation service for free. In my view this begs for a voicemail to text challenge...

Is the Internet Making Us Smarter or Dumber? Yes.
Is the internet making us smarter or dumber? The Wall Street Journal put together a couple of provocative essays this weekend looking at that question: one from Nick Carr, whose most recent book The Shallows argues that the internet is making us less attentive and in general less intelligent (Wired has an excerpt here ), and the other from Clay...
