From Hot to Not: How Component Shortages Will Stifle the Smartphone Market
A handful of the hottest smartphones are at risk of losing their sizzle due to supply issues, and the overall problem is likely to get worse, not better. The most recent issue is a lack of handset displays, causing HTC to announce a switch from AMOLED screens to SuperLCD on two of the phones it builds, for example. But such component swaps are...

How Much 3G Data Is Your Smartphone Using?
I don’t often look at my cellular phone bills, but I happened to glance at the latest one from T-Mobile. My first full monthly billing cycle didn’t show anything out of the ordinary, but the monthly data usage happened to catch my eye. I thought I chewed up more than 437 MB of mobile broadband, but I’m sure that T-Mobile keeps...

Stalling Smartphone Revenue Growth Puts Pricing Plans in the Spotlight
Deep discounts are helping to push smartphones beyond early adopters and hardcore business users and into the hands of mainstream U.S. consumers, according to figures released this morning from The NPD Group. But those lower prices are stalling revenue growth, and demand for the sophisticated handsets may suffer once network operators do away...

Picochip this week said it has built a chip that can support far more mobile users on a femtocell and can also help carriers handle the problem of chatty phones that overwhelm networks with notifications that they’re moving from one tower to another, as well as push email, Twitter and other application requests. The resulting femtocell could...

Apple’s iPhone OS 4.0 – What You Need to Know
After announcing the sale of 450,000 iPads since Saturday, Apple today unveiled its iPhone OS 4.0 , the next evolution in the company’s mobile strategy. Although several of the new features, due for release this summer, were on my list of expectations two days ago , the bulk of them are indeed evolutionary — on the surface. But the...

When Will Nokia’s Smartphone Transition End?
If you were in the handset business and were about to launch a flagship device, how would you build buzz around it? I can think of a number of ways, but with the Nokia N8, the Finnish company has done the opposite of every one of them. The new phone has the dubious distinction of being both the first and the last N-series handset built atop the...
